December 1998 : Jean-Luc Maza (guitars and vocals) and Philippe “Froggy” Faugier (drums) make friends with Jean-Marc Lafaye (keyboards) and Bruno James (bass and vocals), who have just settled in their area. The quartet, which has still no name, sets up its business north of Valence (France) and casts the foundations of a new band, SED LEX.
January 2000 : first “real” concert of the genuine SED LEX.
April-July 2000 : the band tries to gig as much as possible, which is notobvious : their music is not trendy, to say the least, and their imposing backline prevents the band from exploiting all opportunities. Nevertheless, they succeed in finding some interesting outlets and take advantage of them to create their own means of production, Kashmir Productions.
August 2000 : recording of the first demo, released on CD under the title “Harvests of Disorder”, featuring “A Long Time Ago”, “Fortress”, “Carrousel” and “J’ai Vu”.
September 2000-March 2001 : seven hard months. Few gigs, often in front of sparse audiences. Nevertheless, SED LEX work flat out, confident that this attitude will eventually pay off.
August 2001 : recording of the songs “Dream of Escape” and “Harvests of Disorder”, which are commercialized on a limited edition package under the title “That’s the Way it Is”, accompanied by the track “Carrousel” from the first demo. Reactions are unanimous : SED LEX are entering a new phase in their career.
September 2001 : Contrary to what happens with some younger bands, SED LEX, who have no groupies to follow them everywhere, play in a sold out Argonaut club and are given a warm welcome by the audience.
November 2001-March 2002 : concerts, rehearsals alternate with concerts and rehearsals. Meanwhile, the group have attracted the attention of the Brennus label.
May 2002 : start of the recording sessions with a view to a debut album in Villeneuve-de-Berg’s TJT studio, as always under the supervision of their old mate Thierry Savet. The band decides upon a full-length album of 11 tracks. Yet, feeling unsatisfied with the first takes, the band has to start everything from scratch again, while engagements roll in from all parts.
July 2002 : SED LEX opens the Mâcon festival in front of 6000 fans who came chiefly for Dolly and Indochine. At first doubtful about their appearance on such a bill, the group soon takes the plunge and obtain a well-deserved, massive success.
August 2002 : end of the recording sessions for the debut album; the band are approached for a string of gigs at the end of August and into September and October.
March 2003 : “De Viris” scheduled for release on Brennus.
